Need to work on that - The intro, body, and conclusion didn’t come together very well - Your body language could improve – move around a little bit, and keep the hands out of your pockets! - Don’t tell us you didn’t have enough time to prepare - Give some advice in your conclusion, give the audience some action points | | Prepared Speech #3 | | Speaker: | Connie Gao | Evaluator: | David Oliver | | Speech No. & Type: | 7 – Research Your Topic | | Speech Title: | | Salt | | Speech Evaluation: | | - Seems you did do the research required – you gave many supporting facts - We learned things not generally known about salt - You didn’t use complicated terms – good! - Regarding your body language, at the beginning, you were pretty stationary. As you went along, you started to move around a bit more. But by the end of the speech, you were pretty stationary. - You forgot what to say next near the end of your speech, but you remained calm, and you quickly recovered. - Perhaps bring a visual aid next time when doing this kind of speech – perhaps a salt shaker? - You may want to introduce rhetorical questions, such as “Did you know that Salt …?” | | Prepared Speech #4 | | Speaker: | Charles Cao | Evaluator: | Yachan Dong | | Speech No. & Type: | 4 – How to Say It | | Speech Title: | | How to deal with our failures | | Speech Evaluation: | | - Very good structure - You had a clear 3 points - Your speech was very positive – gave us the courage to face failure - You asked questions at the beginning, but the 2 questions didn’t really have a result or conclusion - You gave 3 howto’s on how to deal with failure, but maybe instead give the 3 points but then give your experiences to reinforce the 3 points. - There were a couple of interruptions during your speech, they weakened your speech some (for example, you added unnecessary pauses) | | Prepared Speech #5 | | Speaker: | Emma Qian | Evaluator: | Huub Schrader | | Speech No. & Type: | 1 - Ice Breaker | | Speech Title: | | My Story With The City | | Speech Evaluation: | | - You broke the ice in a nice way (by talking about ice!) - You gave an introduction about yourself – people like this – gets them interested in what you have to say - Seemed you prepared quite well, you spoke very naturally - You only used your notes ~2.5 times - It was very easy to understand what you were talking about – your spoken English is very clear - Your structure was very good (especially the conclusion where you compared your Boyfriend to Beijing) - A suggestion: when you spoke about Hangzhou, you turned your back on the audience when you wrote on the board. Try not to do this – try to find another way to show us a map (perhaps draw it before the speech, or print one out) | | Prepared Speech #6 | | Speaker: | Dinah Lin | Evaluator: | Huub Schrader | | Speech No. & Type: | 10 – Inspire Your Audience | | Speech Title: | | Reach For The Stars | | Speech Evaluation: | | - This was the final speech for the Competent Communicator manual. Congratulations! - Your voice was very clear – your body language gave us the sense that you had a lot of confidence - Your talk was inspiring and entertaining - One of the requirements of the speech was to “connect with the audience”. You may have been lacking here. A suggestion: Maybe spend a little more time on this – explain why we need a goal - You provided several personal examples which helped illustrate your ideas - Overall, very good, but it missed the extra push for audience to come up with plan and goals. | | Awards (Speech Contest) | | First Place: | Dinah Lin | | Second Place: | Charles Cao | | Third Place: | Chris Drumgoole | | Announcements | - Dinah Lin completed her CC (Competent Communicator) manual! Congratulations
- Chris Drumgoole finished the first 5 speeches of the CC manual.
